Anchor Chain Beanie

Christmas knitting is well underway here at my house and, like last year, I'm determined to shop my stash as much as possible.  I had a couple of balls of Istex Alafosslopi that I wanted to use up so I took a look at patterns I've used on Ravelry. Couldn't find exactly what I wanted so, I used a pattern I knitted once before as a take off point and played with it.

This is my variation on The Man Hat by Haven Ashley, a pattern available for free on Ravelry. I wanted a two color hat in a double broken rib stitch, so I took liberties with her excellent pattern.  Changing colors over the ribbing created a chain like effect around the hat which I quite like.

My version makes an adult (large) beanie like hers. You can adjust the finished size by decreasing or increasing your needle size.  This will change your gauge ( e.g. 4.5mm or 5.5 mm).

Gauge: 13 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches in broken rib using 5 mm needles

Materials: 2 balls of Istex Alafosslopi, one maincolor (MC) and one contrasting color (CC)

Tools: 5 mm circular needle (16 inches), 5 mm double pointed needles (DPN), tapestry needle,  scissors.

Pattern

Cast on loosely, 64 sts on the 16 inch 5mm circular needle. Join in the round being careful not to twist your stitches.

Pattern Stitch - Broken Rib

1st round: (k2, p2) repeat to end of round (EOR).

2nd round: knit to EOR

Repeat these rounds five more times (12 rounds from cast on). Should be about 2 inches in length from the cast on edge.

Change to contrasting color (CC) and complete rounds1 and 2 of pattern.

Change to main color (MC) and repeat rounds 1 and 2 twice ( 4 rounds).

Repeat these color changes until you have 5 bands of CC in total.

Change back to MC and complete pattern round 1.

If hat is 7 inches long from cast on edge, begin decreases below. If not, continue knitting in pattern with MC, ending with round 1, until the length is 7 inches or the length desired. (Remember this is a close fitting beanie.)

Decreasing for crown:

1: (k6, ssk) repeat to EOR - 56 sts

2: (k2, p2, k2, p1) repeat to EOR - 56 sts

3:  (k2, ssk, k3) repeat to EOR - 48 sts

4: (k2, p1, k2, p1) repeat to EOR - 48 sts

5: (k3, ssk, k1) repeat to EOR - 40 sts

6: (k2, p1, k1, p1) repeat to EOR - 40 sts

7: (ssk, k3) repeat to EOR - 32 sts

8: (k1, p1) repeat to EOR  - 32 sts

10: (k2, ssk) repeat to EOR  (switch to DPNs) 24 sts

11: (k1, p1, k1) repeat to EOR - 24 sts

12: k1, p1, ssk, p1, ssk, p1, ssk, p1, ssk, p1, ssk, p1, ssk, p1, ssk, p1, k1. - 16 sts

13: (k1, p1) to last two sts, p2tog. - 16 sts

14:  ssk, to EOR  (8 sts remaining) - 8 sts

Break yarn leaving 8-9 inch tail. Using a tapestry needle,  draw yarn through remaining stitches and secure inside the hat. Weave in all yarn ends. Dampen and block.
