During the summer, I spend as much time as I can out in my garden. What I lack in gardening skill, I make up for in enthusiasm. This year I tried a few different annuals and this one turned out to be a beauty. The Bread Seed Poppy produces mauve papery blossoms atop blue-green foliage. Even the immature seed pods are striking in appearance.
I learned that they like to lean as they mature and will keep that in mind when I plan their locations next year. This leaning I expect is deliberate as the seed pod develop small perforations just below the crown, enabling seeds to be released much like salt from a shaker! The local pollinators took a while to master landing on the blossoms as they tend to bob and weave in the breeze, but they eventually mastered it. I've enjoyed having these lovely plants as part of my garden and plan to invite them back next year.
Now that I've started harvesting seeds for next season, I'm already making plans for what I might do with the lovely seed pods. Stay tuned for more on that!
